Greensboro, North Carolina- A College Visit

Last weekend my mother and I took a 10 hour road trip to Greensboro, North Carolina. I am applying to graduate school at University of North Carolina Greensboro, and I wanted to see if I would like it. Here’s a fast forward, I DID! The campus is absolutely beautiful, and I even talked with a graduate student in the program of interest, and fell even more in lust.

Before the visit, we ate at “Crafted- The Art of the Taco.” It’s a restaurant run by a mother-daughter combo, and they sell excellent gourmet tacos. My mom and I tried 4 different tacos between the 2 of us, and everything we tasted was absolutely terrific. Check out their menu here!

These were DELICIOUS. The one on the left had mac and cheese on it, and the one on the right had pulled pork and pineapples!

They also have a wonderful brick welcome gate, which is a stark contrast to the entirely limestone facade of Indiana University. My mom and I drove around the campus before my official visit. It’s a much smaller campus than IU, and I feel as though I could actually walk around the entire thing in a half an hour, compared to running across campus in much longer than that back home. Also, even though it was around 77 degrees, some students were wearing fall clothes and scarves… because they thought it was cold. I could get used to that. Besides campus surfaces, the program actually seems really great. It put some pressure on me to actually start my application in high hopes that they love me.

Don’t I look like I belong on this campus?

The next stop on our tour was the International Civil Rights Museum in downtown Greensboro. Can I nerd out for a moment, and say how awesome it was? My entire schooling I have learned about the Civil Rights Movement and read about these powerful students who made a huge difference. And there I was, standing where they stood. I saw the counter where four black students were denied a cup of coffee. It was there that the stand-in’s started. It was there were yet another spark was ignited to change the course of history. IT WAS SO COOL.

That’s the original building of the first sit-in. Inside those walls you could see the original counter- the highlight for sure.

Greensboro is a city full of awesome history. I’m just glad we had enough time to bite into a small chunk.

Later that night we went to the movies and saw “The Best of Me,” a Nicholas Sparks film. It was only fitting since we were in the South and all.

North Carolina, I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for me (hopefully) in the future.
