Home base is Sunderland, and why not get to see a little bit more of home, eh? Well, as it turns out, there wasn’t a whole lot to see… haha. Megan was sure to tell me to write about how sorry I felt for her that she has to live in this city. While that’s slightly extreme, I can see how it may get old. Haha. But as an outsider, everything is still charming to me. An extra bonus to being a traveler.
After lunch (sidenote- in most restaurants in England, you have to go up to the bar and order. There aren’t waiters, but rather table numbers and food runners. It’s an interesting way to run things.) we went to the museum in Sunderland. It was a mix of a history museum, children’s museum, art museum, and botanical gardens all rolled into one. Megan said they don’t hardly get any funding, and it’s a free musuem. It’s a shame, it was really quaint. A lot of the exhibits were hokey, but there were some that were actually quite nice. There was a special exhibit on paper dresses that reminded me a lot of project runway.
This was in the “time machine” – lol cars and tigers.
A view from inside the “winter gardens.” and as Megan says, it’s pretty much winter year round in Sunderland… haha.
To find a postcard we had to go into the “visitor information center.” This was really sketchy. There were loads of people in there basically trying to get help and voice complaints. When I asked to buy a postcard, they were shocked. Apparently they don’t get many visitors.
Next stop- Penshaw Monument. This is a mini Pantheon on a hill. I read the placard and it was basically built to be pretty. It is now a symbol for travelers that they are “close to home.” That’s cool I suppose.
To get up to the top it was basically a heart attack. Shows me how out of shape I am, and how fit this trip will make me.
