Rugby. Pubs. Beer. A girl can’t leave Dublin and not have experienced these things. So why not combine them all and go to THE Ireland v. England rugby match at a pub? Oh well fear not, that’s exactly what I did.
I wandered around the streets of Dublin near match time until I found a crowded bar of Ireland fans. It had to be crowded in order to get the right mood you see. I went to the Porterhouse in central Dublin. I’ve never been into a bar/pub alone before, so I’m pretty proud of myself for even going. It was for the good of being cultured I should say. Since I’m a professional people watcher (yes my psychology degree is good for something) I waited around and watched to see if anyone was there alone. Lo and behold, I found a victim, er person. I waited a bit and he looked like an awkward alone person at a pub, like myself. I approached him and asked “hey you here with a group” and he said no and I was like THANK GOODNESS. I stuck to him the whole time. He’s a student at Trinity studying science named Gavin. He helped me pick out a beer to order, but what he really did was teach me all the rules of rugby as they were happening. That was a lifesaver, otherwise I would have no idea what was going on.
Heres what I gathered. It’s a lot more fun to watch than American football. It’s faster. Less dumb timeouts. Less padding. More pileups. You have to touch the ball to the ground for goals or a “try” to count. The field is called a pitch. There are scrums. Then there are standing up scrums. The kicker is a player like everyone else.
But most importantly the fans are a blast. Being in a pub was a blast while there was a game on. Also- Ireland won and was in the lead most of the time so the energy was great. All in all, a great day.
