I never knew you could ski down a mountain in tennis shoes, while also not wearing skis. Austria has taught me so much already. I went up to the Unsterberg mountain today via cable car, and then hiked the rest of the way up to the top. It is quite snowy up there. The peak has an elevation of 6,473 ft. Going up in some worn out Nikes (the best shoes I got, mind you) wasn’t exactly the easiest. I’ve thoroughly worn out the tread on the bottom, so I was sliding like a penguin. Martin, my new couchsurfing host, was obviously better prepared, and he was wearing some nice hiking boots and zipping along like nobody’s business. He also goes hiking a lot and is quite in shape… Michaella on the other hand is quite out of shape. I was trying to play it cool like I wasn’t actually as out of breathe as I was. I don’t think I was acting very well. I only fell once though, and considering how clumsy I am, I’d take that as a tally in the win column.
I’d take a heart attack or two for this view.
At the top of the mountain, Martin and I ate an Austrian lunch. I wish I could tell you what it was, or even how to say it, but I can do neither. Everyone talks so differently here and very quickly. I can’t understand a thing. Luckily food is a universal language. Whatever I ate was delicious. It was a “sweet” meal served with applesauce that you dip those things in. YUM.
Lunch with a view. I love Salzburg.
And that’s only the mountain. I took a quick hour and a half walk around Old Town with a girl I met at breakfast before I met up with Martin. We found a Christmas and Easter store, with very delicately hand painted eggs. It looks like they may only celebrate two holidays here… But the eggs were GORGEOUS.
They even had portraits of Mozart, and a picture of the fortress. Like that’s some detail orientated art.
I shall add more pictures of Salzburg when I’ve done more in the actual town. But my mountain adventure was enough to tire me out. Also, I have realized that I’m an old soul. I don’t always like to go out. Maybe once in a while, but I much prefer hanging out in small groups or more relaxed settings…. so holing up on my new couch after an adventure was well earned.
Thanks for sticking with me until the end. As a bonus, here is my feet standing in two countries at once. That’s right, I hopped the border to Germany today while being in the Alps. Just like the VonTrapps.
