Children Terrorizing Pigeons in Zagreb

Today I started my adventures in Zagreb, Croatia. I noticed that the children in the squares like to terrorize pigeons even more than I do. And I thoroughly enjoy it. These kids were super cute about it though, running through flocks of pigeons with their arms up, and one even took his little push bike and was wailing like a siren. It could have been annoying, but they were too darned cute for that to be the case.

The city itself is just really pleasant. It’s a small city, and I did my walking loops of both the old and new town in an afternoon. I like cities of this size. Also, there are less people which is nice too.

I started my day at the Dolac Market. Since I slept in, I got there as people were pretty much clearing out, but I still purchased a few apples for snacks. There is nothing quite like a fresh apple.

Then I made my way to the main attraction… The Museum of Broken Relationships. It is a really cool, small museum. The concept behind the museum is one of healing, not of bitterness. People from all around the world sent in objects of past relationships and explained the stories behind them. Some of them were full of love, some tinged with regret, but they all had a theme of being thankful to heal by letting go. I spent my time reading all of these stories.

“How you gonna toast now?!”

There were even 2 pieces from, BLOOMINGTON, IN USA. That’s right, we made it. That was a shock for me, and really cool. It’s quite a small world out there.

This was the “confessionals” book.

I really really enjoyed this museum and highly recommend it. It tells the tales of a universal truth- everyone experiences heartbreak. It’s a beautiful thing if you even get to feel love in the first place. It doesn’t matter where you are from, but love is universal. I really liked that. Yes, the exhibit is of broken relationships, but it’s also the stories of love. It also gives the donater a great sense of relief once they finally let go, like the final stages of healing.

And sometimes you just have to treat yourself. This wasn’t as good as the ice cream I had with Szili in Budapest, but still QUITE delicious.

My first full day in Zagreb was quite all right. But getting into my hostel last night was a nightmare. The directions were wrong  from the website, and I got extremely lost… at 10 pm. Not the best timing. I finally wandered into a McDonald’s for the wifi, and then realized I was 1.1 miles away. So I started walking. By the time I got there, my back was broken. Not literally, but I was not pleased. I don’t know what else to even send home. Anyways, once I checked in all was fine, but I was praying like a bandit until then. Before I even got into the city I had decided I hated it, but then I checked my attitude and it was much better.

And a bonus for making it to the end: My favorite quote from the MuBR.
