Lost in Luxembourg

I’ve been home for over a week, and I neglected to write about a few of the cities I visited! To be honest, I had had ENOUGH of writing on that tiny tablet, and I really missed my laptop. But, something really cool happens when you are out of the country for about 3 and a half months… and if you didn’t write your passwords down you forget them. You forget them all. Then, if you own a Dell with a major safety feature like me, it locks you out after 5 tries. 5 TRIES PEOPLE. Not even 6 or 7. Or if you are impatient like me… 100. It took me a $130 phone call to end up in frustration and without a laptop for a full week. Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with some technologically savvy family members and friends who worked out my issue. Shoutout to Janet, my laptop’s guardian angel.

Long story short, write down your passwords in a safe place.

ANYWAYS: here is a quick recap of my one night in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (another country for the bucket list!).

Luxembourg is incredibly beautiful. The youth hostel rests in the bowl of the city. The old part of the city is up above it. The train tracks run on a huge bridge that kind of looks like Roman aqueducts. This is a pretty horrible description of a beautiful place, but use your imagination.

This is the lower area of Luxembourg City. I found this while I was conveniently lost. I met 2 British girls in my hostel who were going on a night tour that started at 9. They said it only took about 15 minutes to get to the city center, which they had been to earlier that day, but I had not. I left with half an hour, thinking that would be plenty of time to meet up. Little did I know… I went the COMPLETE wrong direction. Apparently you are supposed to climb up to the top of the hill to get to the city center. I did not do such a thing. Instead, I took a nice little 15 minute field trip in the wrong direction. After a sprint to the top of the city and getting lost on my way to the tourist office, I made it on the night tour.

On this tour, we had a cute little tour guide, who moved about the speed of a glacier, but really knew about her history. Luxembourg has a pretty cool history, but what I really got out of the tour was that I got to see the Prime Minister, who was celebrating his wedding.

The next day I went to the Bock Casemates, which are an extravagant and medieval maze. This used to protect the city, but when Luxembourg became neutral, the “man” made them dismantle it, so only a little bit remains. I went to this lovely UNESCO World Heritage site, and ended up climbing a ton of stairs, and then getting extremely confused and turned around. So turned around in fact that I reached the end… as in I saw the light outside of a locked metal gate. But all in all, this is a really neat historical site, and it will definitely give you a workout, or if you’re out of shape like me, you will feel like you’re dying… with pride.

Luxembourg is really quite beautiful, and I’m glad I made the effort to get here, even if it was just for one night.
