Smart phones are great when traveling. Especially if you have wifi. But sometimes that isn’t always the case. It’s nice to have apps you can rely on. I took a 99 day solo trip to Europe, and used the following apps almost daily.
Rail Planner– Eurail is the creator of this app, and it works OFFLINE! You can check train times on the go, and especially helpful if you miss your train! Also, you check to see when your stop is while you are riding the train. Even if you don’t have a Eurail, this would probably still be really helpful.
Track My Tour– Maybe my favorite app. You can take pictures and drop pins at locations- offline. You add comments, even mention the weather if you choose. Then get on wifi and add your offline waypoints, and you end up with a really cool map of all the neat places you’ve visited.
Trip Wallet– This app isn’t free, but it is well work the $1.99 or so. I tried a free version, but you have to pay after 25 entries (which you will have). You plug in all of your expenses and it categorizes them for you and tells you where you are spending your money. It’s also helpful to be cognizant of how much dough is running out of your wallet. You do this by entering in the amount in the foreign currency, and it spits it out in the currency of your choosing.
Maps.Me– This free app lets you download maps of the city for use offline. It also has all of the attractions, shops, cafes, food places, and everything you could need already on the map. You can also delete the map once you’re done using it, since I know how precious space is.
Hostelworld- I used Hostel World whenever I booked my rooms, but I’m sure whatever agent you choose has an app. Just download the app and it literally makes everything so much easier. I didn’t bite the bullet and download until about 1/2 way through my trip, and I wasted so much time. It’s handy.
Dreamdays– A countdown/ count up (?) app. Track your progress by counting how many days you’ve survived abroad, and also make a countdown of when you get to climb into your bed at home.
