Inside: The Life of a Hobo

Today on my travel to Sunderland to visit my British better 1/2, I learned a few very important lessons. There is a very significant difference between a ticket for a train and having a seat on said train. I learned this the hard way.

I traveled a little over 5 hours from Canterbury to Sunderland to visit Megan (OMG FINALLY!). I had 3 exchanges and quite a long ride. I arrived at the train station this morning to buy my ticket.

Lesson #1: Don’t buy a long distance train ticket twenty minutes before hand, because they will rob you blind. I paid equivalent to about $230 for a ticket that should have cost much less.

Lesson #2: Just because you buy a ticket for a train does not mean you will be able to sit on said train. Be especially careful when the trip is over 3 hours long. Then you may have to sit on the floor in between the bathroom and the trash can with a huge backpack. People may stare at you like you are a homeless person. People may not make eye contact with you because you are sitting in a weird spot.

Lesson #3: It is best to make the most of this situation. I made friends with a cute ginger family. I hung out with a dad and his two cute ginger sons for the entirety of the ride. I played peek-a-boo and then when that kid fell asleep I just read my book.

In other words, yes I sat on the floor riding the rails like a hobo today, and paid for it. I have learned a valuable lesson, but better now than later. I am so blessed to now be reunited with Megan for the next few days, it was worth it to feel like a hobo for a few hours.
