Spending a total of 24 hours in Vienna maybe wasn’t my smartest move, but it was definitely jam packed with awesome sights. Martin told me I better go to Vienna, if I went anywhere in Austria. So I bit the bullet and went to to see such a gorgeous city. I’m glad I didn’t skip it entirely, as was the plan.
First stop, I went to the Freud Museum, as Vienna was the home of psychology’s own, Sigmund Freud. While I am not a huge fan of his theories, I figured I needed to go see where he worked. As a psychology nerd, it was way cool. A little overpriced for the actual museum, but I’m happy I went.
This is the waiting room that Freud’s patients used before consultations. WORD. SO COOL. Haha, imagine being in the next room being told you were suffering the Oedipus complex or penis envy. Freud, what a kidder.
Next, after a helpful tip from the reception desk at my hostel, I went to an opera for only 4 euro. I saw Lady Macbeth… of something something. Oh the catch? It’s a standing ticket, so you stand the whole time. After a long day in crappy shoes, this was a push, but overall it was a fantastic experience. The opera house is beautiful, absolutely breathtaking. I met 3 other solo travelers and we hung out (and I ate Sachertorte, which was invented in Vienna… this is just a really good chocolate cake). Lady Macbeth is actually a really dark storyline. What is especally cool about this opera house is that they have little subtitle machines built in. You can pick a language (German or English) and actually know what’s going on the whole time. The plot of Lady Macbeth, this woman is bored and tired and feels unloved. Her husband leaves for work and she cheats on him. The master of the house finds out, so she kills him. Then the husband finds out, so she kills him too, so she can be together with the other man. The end. Literally, that’s it.
I made some friends at the hostel, and the next morning I went to visit Schonbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs summer home. It was such a magnificent palace. Me and an Australian fellow named Joel toured around the inside of the palace, and the grounds. Unfortunately, it is still winter, so the gardens aren’t in full bloom. I can only imagine how they are at their peak. The architechture itself was really wild. The building looked fake, like it was a painted set piece.
The gardens were great to walk through, and from the top of the Gloriette, you can see the whole city, and basically the whole grounds.
Off to the Hundertwasser Haus. This is just a really cool building I saw on Pinterest and wanted to see in real life. Pretty much awesome. It was designed by an architect for every room to have windows. To be a tenant, your contract is only for a year, and it’s mostly artists that live there. Apparently every room is quite unique. He has a really interesting style.
There I decided to vist St. Stephansdom Cathedral… I thought I should see maybe one of the famous monuments of Vienna. I’m so glad I did, and it has nothing to do with the cathedral. There I met 2 people… from INDIANA!!! MY HOME STATE! One is studying abroad in Vienna, and one is studying abroad in Rome. It just so happened they were going to be in Bratislava the next day, where I was too! It was a literal God-send. I’m so happy I met them. Oh, the cathedral was nice too.
Vienna was absolutely gorgeous, and next time I will actually try and see more. But for 24 hours I think I did a good job.
