Ljubljana, Slovenia. Pronounced: Loo-blee-ahn-ah. Don’t worry it took coming here to be able to pronounce it for me. This capital city is one of the cutest places I have been yet. All of the buildings are brightly colored and pretty much everything is within a 15 minute walking distance- that means it is roughly smaller than IU’s campus. Their mascot is a dragon, which I think is pretty cool. I missed the walking tour because I was packing… I had basically an entire hostel room to myself the past couple of nights, so I sprawled out. I do miss having a place to put things, but living out of a backpack has it’s benefits too: the main one- traveling. Back to Ljubljana- it’s a hipster city and I loved it.
This is cleverly named, the “Dragon Bridge.” Tricky, can’t get anything past these Slovenians.
That’s right, SUNSHINE. (this would be the only time I saw this rare sight in Slovenia…)
I say that Ljubljana is a hipster city because of all the handmade shops. I may have gone a little crazy and purchased a few rings, vintage necklace, scarf, and a socks becase they were just too cute to pass up. It’s basically like Pinterest threw up on one of the streets here, with all of the goodies you can find.
Additionally, I have eaten some awesome food- none of which is Slovenian. My first night I had some awesome Japanese noodles, the next night I had some chili con carne… oops. Still tasty.
Bikes on bikes on bikes- and a view of some of the old buildings.
On my last day in Ljubljana, I went to Metelkova- which is an arty district. I was lucky enough to get there right as it started raining. But the street art was just too cool not to risk it, so I sure hope my camera is okay. Metelkova is this area full of grafiti and street art- literal art that you just walk around. I’m not sure if I was missing some sort of memo, but it was pretty empty when I was there.
The above aren’t graffiti- the left is wood cuts, and the right is mosaic. NEAT.
Graffiti + jellyfish = a few of my favorite things.
/\ Me trying to be artsy. Moments after this picture was taken, a cat meowed and jumped down from the sky. I didn’t see it coming and I quite literally nearly peed myself. Quickly hustling to a different part, I wanted to make sure no secret cat attacks would befall me.
At this point in the day, it was, suffice it to say, pouring rain. But I trekked on, and up the Ljubljana castle I went. The outside is beautiful and I dare say that these people must have been super ahead of their time back in the middle ages. There were speakers with live music throughout, a restaurant, and quite modern vicinities. I joke. I didn’t stay long, because… I’ve seen a lot of castles. The ivy on the outside was my favorite part.
And now, the part you didn’t even know you were waiting for: Michaella got a haircut in a foreign country where English isn’t their first language! This was either really brave or really stupid. I didn’t go in with any pictures of what I would like (stupid), but the lady seemed nice. I went into the equivalent of a Great Clips- maybe a little bit nicer. About an hour later, I exited, now sporting bangs. I’m not set on how I feel about them, but maybe this nice Slovenian was just trying to help me expand my look. Psh, I’m so European now…
