Being One With The Birds in Bavaria

On my 2 month anniversary to myself in Europe, I went paragliding in the Bavarian Alps while on a day trip. I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while, but wanted to wait until you could experience it with me, with the video! It took quite a while to upload. BUT now it’s here and ready to party.

I never intended to go paragliding, but our tour guide casually mentioned that it might be an option. For a thrill seeker like myself, you don’t just go around casually mentioning things like this. So I was very curious, and initially the price turned me off. There were only 2 spots, and one man, Mike, decided positively that he would go. Then when our guide asked who needed to go to the ATM (cash only business) I was like, uh yeah. But actually, another girl from Argentina wanted to go. So we left it up to a coin toss. Which I lost. Bummer. However, she couldn’t draw cash from the machine, so I ended up being able to go! God was definitely smiling on me. I am SO GLAD I was given the chance to go.

This is Ferdinand. He is super German. He has blonde hair and blue eyes and everything. I found out later that he is actually a world champion paraglider for the German team. So that was a neat bonus, especially for my first time flying.

My experience was incredible. The instructions were, “just run.” That’s it. I got nothing else. Ferdi’s English wasn’t the greatest, but we got it done. So I literally just ran off the side of a mountain. Then, we were flying.

The views were incredible. It’s something I wish I could put into words, and if you ask me in person what it was like, I’m sure I can tell you. But I think the video at the bottom of this post will help describe it better than I could. It’s a 6 minute video and I just blink a lot and giggle awkwardly. I point out a castle, which is the Neuschwanstein Castle that I was super pumped about. We got to fly super close to it.

The whole time you just kind of relax and hang out in the paraglider. It’s AWESOME.

Pre glide excitement.

The instructions for landing were kind of like the instructions for take off, but opposite. You start running in the air, and then keep going when your feet hit the ground. We had a very smooth landing (because I’m a pro, obviously).

That’s ME. IN THE AIR.

To summarize: I flew like a bird, and got the bird’s perspective on a beautiful landscape. God has created such beautiful things on this planet, and when you get to experience these things in a new way, it’s absolutely marvelous. I am quite blessed.

Thanks for tuning in!…. or just scrolling down. Haha. Either way, here is my sweet vid.

    1. It cost 155 euro for the paragliding! I was on a Mike’s Bike Tours where it was offered. I don’t know how to get there independently!
